1. Trail No. 9 “Lava River” & Alternative Trail No. 1 “Valle dell’Inferno”

Trail No. 9 (“Lava River”) is widely regarded as one of the most educational paths within the Vesuvius National Park. This easy 2 km walk takes students directly onto the solidified lava field created during the 1944 eruption—the last eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

⚠️ Important Seasonal Note: Due to its deep caldera positioning, direct sun exposure, and lack of shade, trekking through the Valle dell’Inferno is strictly not recommended from June through August, as high summer temperatures can make the route uncomfortably hot and exhausting for students. For summer visits, Trail 9 or early morning itineraries are strongly advised.

2. The Great Cone (Trail No. 5): Standing at the Edge of the Crater

Pairing the lower volcanic trails with the ascent to the Great Cone (Trail No. 5) gives students a complete volcanological perspective.
