Phlegrean Islands

Procida and Ischia

The Phlegrean islands they get their name because of the geological area of Campi Flefrei, a vast volcanic area located in the northern part of the Gulf of Naples. The most famous islands are Ischia and Procida, followed by the smaller sisters Vivara and Nisida. The islands were first populated in classical age by the Greeks calling the Pithecussae islands, meaning, islands of the apes. This particular name has its origins in the myth, and not as one would think because the presence of real monkeys on the islands. The story says that Zeus transformed two brigands into two monkeys as punishment and they were confined each on an island.

The two islands are popular destinations for different reasons.

Ischia

Originally called by the Greeks Pithecusa, then nicknamed the island of the potters and nowadays is also called Green Island, for its rich vegetation. Ischia is among the most popular destinations for spa lovers, in fact the island has volcanic origins, being the emerged part of an underwater volcano, whose visible part is Mount Epomeo, 789 m high. These characteristics make the island a place for wellness and health, where guests are pampered and revitalized. There are many thermal areas loved by tourists, one worth mentioning is the fantastic inlet of Sorgeto, whose thermal sea waters can reach a temperature of 100 degrees, being able to make a hard-boiled egg. But it’s also a place of beauties modelled by nature.

Ischia’ architectures are in perfect harmony with nature, a classic example is the Aragonese Castle.

In short, the island of Ischia, the largest of the Campania sisters and the third largest in Italy, is a succession of natural wonders.

Procida

It is smaller, but certainly not the least beautiful. In fact, the island was the source of inspiration for several writers and films. A place where time seems to have stopped; where traditions and simplicity make the island truly characteristic. Corricella, with its fishing village and pastel houses, is certainly among the most beautiful places on the island. Activities like a walk through its narrow streets, or a nice swim near its banks have something special. In short, small in size but full of possibilities
