Draw a circle around Naples, you find 7 wonders

Put a compass on the map taking Naples as the center, and draw a circle. Now tell us which other city has such a concentration of wonderful places like Capri, Sorrento, Pompeii, Amalfi, Positano, Ischia, Procida, Vesuvio and much more. Destinations so close to each other but so different in beauty, genre and attraction. In this article, we introduce you 7 wonders around Naples.

It is among the most popular volcanoes in the world, but also among the most dangerous, having 3,000,000 people living around. Its destructive power has spoken a lot about itself in the past, categorizing its explosive force as the strongest in the world. In fact, the eruption of 79 CE it is the most famous of the known eruptions; it has forever buried cities such as Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplonti and Stabia, but is also the first written testimony of a volcanic eruption. We could say that volcanology was born at the foot of this mountain. Its last eruption took place in 1944, filmed by the American air force, after that the volcano entered its resting phase while remaining active. Neapolitans love and fear the giant mountain, but certainly, they all agree that is the truth symbol of the Gulf of Naples. Finally yet importantly, 1994 they established National Park full of biodiversity and eco-sustainable activities. This giant is among our 7 wonders of Campania region, but also nature world heritage, charming for both tourists and travellers.

The unfortunate tragedy, which saw these small coastal towns being totally buried by the frightening eruption almost 2000 years ago, allowed us to bring to light an extraordinary testimony of Romans life style at that time. In fact it is the best historical preservation in the world. A magic place where you can take a real leap in time without having to resort the sci-fi. Pompeii is the most known, thanks to Andeson’s recent Hollywood Movie in 2014 “Pompeii”, but Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabia are certainly extraordinary likewise. Don’t need the time-traveling DeLorean automobile to send us back in time, the past itself has decided to travel time in the present, for this reason we include our ruins as the second wonder of the Campania region.

Sorrento and Amalfi Coast

The coast is famous for its promontories that overlook the sea, making every part of the coast an extraordinary panoramic point. Beaches, inlets and surrounding hills are gorgeous, not to mention small coves carved into the rock that make it a magical place for bathing. Since Greeks and Romans, they loved Sorrento. Its Lattari Mountains, making the peninsula attractive also from the point of view of hiking. On the other side of Mountain range, begins the Amalfi Coast, which is a small corner of Heaven. Places such as Positano, Amalfi, Ravello are grouped here. Also from Agerola (Sorrento side) start the famous “Path of the Gods”, 8 km of coastline landscapes. In short, a small strip of land with many Heaven corners, make it the third wonder of Campania Region, charming for both tourists and travellers.

The Phlegrean islands take their name from the geological area of ​​Campi Flegrei, a vast volcanic area located in the northern part of the Gulf of Naples. The most famous islands are Ischia and Procida; follow the younger sisters Vivara and Nisida. The two major islands are two destinations for different tourist characters. Ischia is one of the most popular destinations for spas lovers and relaxation. In fact, the island has volcanic origins, being the emerged part of an underwater volcano; it has many natural thermal sites. An example is the inlet of Sorgeto, with its thermal waters, are an example of beauties modelled by nature. German Chancellor Angela Merkel choose Ischia every year to find moments of relaxation away from the chaotic politic life. Procida, on the other hand, is smaller, but certainly no less attractive. This place the time seems to have stopped, traditions and simplicity make the island truly characteristic. Corricella, with its fishing village and pastel-colored houses, is certainly among the most beautiful places on the island. The Phlegrean islands for their relaxation imprint are the fourth wonder of the Campania region.

Capri, alike Positano, is a world destination of the dolce vita. Illustrious and famous people, from all over the world, come here with their super luxury yachts. During the day, the island became so lively with shopping, sea excursions, sunbathing and super aperitifs that start the nightlife. The island has naturalistic, historical, fashion, art, culture, culinary tradition and much more in it. By boat, you can admire its splendid coves: such as the Coral Grotto, the White Grotto, the Green Grotto and the famous Blue Grotto. Finally yet importantly, you will cross Faraglioni, huge rocks with a spikish form emerging from the sea – this is the real symbol of Island. Capri with its glamour and nature is our fifth wonder of Campania Region, a place so loved by tourists.

It is famous for being the largest royal residence in the world. An ambitious project from the beginning to surpass the forerunner palace in Versailles. The construction involved a very high number of workers, directed by the chief architect Luigi Vanvitelli, and saw the use of precious materials such as tuff from San Nicola La Strada, travertine from Bellona, lime from San Leucio, brick from Capua, the grey marble from Mondragone and the white marble from Carrara. The Royal Residence covers an area of 44,000 square meters and have about 1,200 rooms with 1,742 windows, 34 stairs and 1026 fireplaces. Finally yet importantly, the palace park is big 120 hectares and extends through two long parallel avenues for 3 km in length. In this relaxing walk, you will see a series of suggestive fountains, the Italian garden, and the English garden. The royal residence is the right combination of charm, luxury and nature, that’s why, is the sixth wonder of Campania region, a place so loved by tourist.

Paestum

It is one of the oldest cities in Campania and is located on the Tyrrhenian coast, south of Salerno. Greek colonists founded it first as Posedonia, and became one of the main centres of Magna Graecia. Paestum began its decline until final abandonment in the eighth century CE due to silting of the surrounding area, which hid the ruins to the world. Recently Archaeologists they enlighted again to be seen on the world stage. Paestum has three of the oldest and best-preserved Greek temples in the world, more than the famous Parthenon in Athens. Furthermore, the area is close to the sea, and is tourist attraction for summer holidays. A small Greek polis with beautiful beaches, it is worth being the last of the wonders of Campania.
